A successful symbiosis: plogging combines environmental protection with physical exercise and the opportunity to do something good together – our employees in Bremen also found it fun.

Combine your jog with collecting trash? This is a challenge that 43 employees took up at our “plogging event” in Bremen last September.

BLG initiated the event with the weird name as part of the “German Sustainability Action Days.” The word “plogging” is a portmanteau word composed from “jogging” and “plocka”, Swedish for “pick up.” Under this motto, the participants picked up litter while jogging along the running route and disposed of it properly at the end of the day. Equipped with gloves and trash bags, they not only did something good for the environment, but also raised awareness about waste disposal.

Our partners Bremer Stadtreinigung and the organization “Clean Up Your City” provided the necessary equipment for collecting the trash. The participants’ creature comforts were catered to between collection rounds by the FOODSHARING initiative, which drew attention to the issue of food waste with a buffet created from salvaged food.

“The event was a sure-fire success,” reports Ronald Wijnbergen, Group Human Resources Director, who actively participated in the plogging event. “I had great fun and really enjoy supporting campaigns like this one.” In total, around 100 kilograms of waste was collected and disposed of properly in the course of the event.
