A strong link
Germany’s roads are reaching their limits. Construction sites, crumbling bridges and congestion are not just frustrating. They are increasingly becoming a bottleneck for freight transport, especially when heavy and oversized cargo must reach its destination reliably, safely, and on time. BLG LOGISTICS is addressing this challenge with a new heavy lift shuttle.
Since spring 2025, a heavy lift shuttle has been transporting self-propelled high-and-heavy cargo, and virtually all types of project cargo, once a month from Bonn to Bremerhaven – and to ports along the entire route. This joint service of BLG, in collaboration with Bonn-based Am Zehnhoff-Söns GmbH, is more reliable, more cost-efficient, and significantly more climate-friendly than road transport. Demand is correspondingly strong.
6 days
is how long the inland vessel takes to travel from Bonn to Bremerhaven. On average, that’s two to three days longer than by truck. But shuttle transport is far easier to schedule, more punctual, and more environmentally friendly.
The vessels, which can be up to 73 meters long, offer flexible transport for all types of machinery, oversized cargo, and heavy loads. Partial and mixed loads are easily accommodated, and terminals such as Krefeld and Duisburg, as well as other ports along the route, can be served flexibly. With virtually no weight limits, shipments can also be consolidated on a single vessel, further easing pressure on Germany’s roads and reducing emissions.
“The difficult conditions on the roads call for smart solutions. Together with Am Zehnhoff-Söns, we’re opening up new routes for our customers on inland waterways with our regular heavy lift shuttle service.”
Less administrative effort for permits and greater planning certainty make inland waterways an increasingly attractive alternative. BLG plans to meet growing demand by increasing service frequency – because where the road reaches its limits, the BLG shuttle is just getting started.
